Gasoline Engine Management: System Components and Diagnosis
Course Content - 3 days
Modules and subject areas Engine management systems - motronic overview Complete tests to prove the integrity of the fuel supply sub-system using typical fuel pressure test equipment.
Recommended literature for prior reading is the Bosch publication:
Delegates will be expected to complete a course examination. A certificate of competence will be issued to those achieving a pass mark of 70% or over. To obtain full Diagnostic Technician status the delegate is required to complete the Diagnostic Technician, one day practical and theory test.
Accreditation
This course is designed for garage service technicians who carry out test and diagnosis on vehicle engine management systems. The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to work with confidence and efficiency on a range of engine management systems. Customary interrogation techniques via self-diagnosis will be covered, along with direct testing of typical system sensors and actuators.
The course is divided into linked modules and subject areas, which allow the essential underpinning theory and practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The modules and subject areas cover the following topics:
Motronic - fuel supply sub-system
Diagnosis - testing and circuit diagrams
Systems input sensors
Systems actuators and ignition components
Emissions control overview
Attainment
On successful completion of VSG 5 delegates will be able to:
Carry out typical self-diagnosis test routines to retrieve and display fault codes stored within the system memory.
Perform individual component tests to identify component or circuit connection faults identified by typical fault codes.
Prerequisites and Recommended Reading
Successful completion of course VSE 1 “Essential Test Procedures” is a prerequisite to attending VSG 5. Completion of VSG 2 “Gasoline Engine Management: Ignition Systems” is a prerequisite for any gasoline vehicle-based technicians and all delegates should be familiar with typical multi-scope tester operation. Prior attendance on VSTD 9 “Diagnosis using the Oscilloscope” is strongly recommended as well as the appropriate equipment user’s courses.

Assessment and Certification
The tests and practical tasks will be carried out using Bosch test equipment, service information, training notes and course material.
Upon successful completion, the delegate will be awarded with Bosch Diagnostic Technician status and certificate, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
All Bosch Diagnostic Technician programme courses are co-certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) QAA scheme.
